The state of surveillance is increasing rapidly world wide both in the digital and physical space. Lot of the times, the citizen’s are not fully aware of the state or the consequences.

Software Freedom Law Center India (SFLC.in) has been tracking Internet shutdowns and Free speech violation in the digital space in India. Internet Shutdowns Tracker by SFLC.in has already proven to be a very good tool for initial and primary source of Information on Internet shutdowns in India. SFLC.in’s initiative to track the state of the surveillance starts with mapping the CCTV surveillance cameras in India using Open data and Open Street Map is to provide enough initial and primary data set to anyone seeking to understand the status/state of surveillance.

This is currently a pilot project, collaborating with local OpenStreetMap volunteers and contributors. This talk is for the audience who are interested in knowing surveillance and OpenStreetMap. This talk will include details and plans on how the project is planned to be executed, including 1. Community engagement 2. Building open source tools for the tracker 3. Contributing to OpenStreetMap data 4. Organising Mapping parties 5. Providing awareness and interest contributors to map. 6. why maps are important for visualising such data. And would love to hear from others on their views, suggestions and experiences.
