Beatrice Torracca
I am Beatrice and I am part of the Italian l10n Team.
My academic career is centered on Biology and Microbiology - I have a master degree in Biology, I did my PhD in a Veterinary Science Department studying Food Microbiology and I currently work in the same field as a laboratory technician at the University of Pisa.
My interest in Informatics and anything computer related has always been a personal interest and I am mostly self-taught.
Thankfully, I discovered Linux and free software with Debian Potato. Since then I have been active in the Italian community of free software translators. I worked initially on reviewing documentation (mostly HOWTOs), and moved to translation and gradually focused on Debian related work with time, helping in the translation of packages' description, the Wiki, documentation and po-debconf files.
I can't recall when I started contributing to the Debian Italian l10n effort, but I know I was working on the then new DDTP in 2001 and nowadays my involvement in the Italian localization is almost exclusively related to Debian.

Translations and beyond - How translation work can improve Debian as a whole
Translation is a good entry point into the Debian Community and in starting one’s contribution to it.
The starting point of this talk is my experience as a long-term translator in Debian and some experiences from the Debian Italian l10n Team, hopefully showing how translating can be a way to be and feel part of the Debian Community as a whole.
Translating in Debian
There are different areas where translation work can be done in Debian. Each has its own workflow, and requires different tools and skills (but nothing too difficult), and different amounts of time.
In this workshop, a few different translation workflows will be shown, and participants will have the opportunity to get their feet wet with some guidance from contributors who are already involved in translation work.
